[Text] Mentorship
[Text] Nyna Flowers – Home Office Associate
[Nyna] Later on in my career, I started to build the confidence that I needed to be a leader along with the encouragement and advice of my mentors. So that’s when I began to get very strategic about the people who I was meeting with and the development opportunities that I was taking in order for me to achieve my goal of leadership.
[Nyna] So if you have a role where you have the autonomy and the freedom, so to speak, to organize your day in your calendar, be strategic and protect your time. But if you don’t, it’s really important to get your leader involved to talk about how important your development is so you guys can work together to plan ways that you can seek out development opportunities, either in your day-to-day work or outside of it.
[Nyna] And so what I would occasionally do is go through the career site and just look through different roles to see what interests me.
[Nyna] Nothing is going to be easy. You can be so passionate about development, you can be doing great at your job, and you may have an opportunity to go for your dream job, and you may not get it. Now you’re deflated, you’re defeated. But what I learned is that it’s very important to listen to the feedback. I know it’s easy to get upset, didn’t get the job. It’s happened to me several times. But listen to the feedback and apply it and be ready for the next opportunity, because you never know when it’ll come back around.
